    1. I find this a difficult book to review since all pretense to objectivity is gone. Doug Unger is a friend, comrade, mentor, and Sorayya's teacher. This is not a novel. Doug would say that it is a "documentary novel," as "art of witness." He had to say these things as a means of honoring his second family in Argentina. This stuff happened and it happened to his intimates.I cannot agree with Nethra's criticism that the book is overwritten. Doug has probably known this story his whole life and waite [...]

    2. Essentially, the book spans 3-4 months spent in Argentina in 1985 by Diego and his wife. In high school Diego was the foreign exchange student to the Benevento family, a family composed of Papa (Martin), Mama, and three sons, Martin Secundo, Alejo, and Miguelito. Papa was a lawyer and the family was wealthy. After Diego returns to the U. S Juan Peron dies, his wife Isabel rises to power, but because she is apparently the victim of a severe mental breakdown she is put under house arrest by the mi [...]

    3. I found this book very powerful. Unger draws us into the realities of his characters who make their way as economic and political forces they can't control move through their lives while their family attempts to deal with the loss of two sons to the Argentinean "dirty war" of 1976-83. Unger traces the day-to-day angst of dealing with loss, memory and the lack of knowledge of how one's loved ones died. Especially when their deaths, the revolution their gave their lives to are silenced collectivel [...]
