    2. I enjoyed the story itself, and if I was rating the book on that aspect alone, it would have easily received another star. But other issues, particularly with the translation and editing, necessitate a lower rating in my opinion. Given that I read the English translation of this book, the occasional typo or misplaced colloquialism is understandable, and generally, in my own humble opinion, not really worthy of mention. But 'occasional' is hardly an adequate descriptor in this particular instance [...]

    3. I won this book in a GoodReads give-away. This historical fiction novel is centered in Italy, and the surrounding trade regions, during the 1580s. I like a book that teaches me something, and this book was certainly successful in conveying how the ordinary person lived - during this time of food shortages, plague, and strict military rule. The author is a historian, and I liked that I could trust the book for historical accuracy. This book has nice aesthetics - it is printed on heavy paper and i [...]

    5. I don't usually leave books unrated, but considering I was reading a translation, I'm going to be nice.I cannot read any book that so abuses the word because and the comma.

    6. I'm downgrading my review of this book; I loved the beginning, but the novel is entirely plot-driven, the characters are paper-thin and the resolution relies on many coincidences. The author is a professional historian, so the historical details are engrossing, and I love and am fascinated by the history of Venice which is why this for three stars (and it's a quick read.) But the two "main" characters are extremely passive (and it may well be true that the poor were only acted upon by fate and t [...]

    9. I am a lover of Venice and so when I heard about this book, I jumped on the opportunity to read and review it- I’m so glad I did! The Eyes of Venice takes place in the 16th c magic and splendor of this sublime place- but also sails us through the slums, danger and poverty that was a horrid reality back then. The life of two newlyweds, Matteo and Bianca is suddenly severed when Matteo is wrongly accused and persecuted. Their life turns into a tumultuous series of dramatic events that kept me hoo [...]

    10. I judge a book by the entire package. A book is a collaboration between author, translator, designer, and editor(s). Unfortunately a fine novel and good translation have here been undermined from cover to cover by extremely sloppy editorial work, both at the copy editing/proofreading level and at the more substantive level. I've never read a book with more mistakes throughout. Those, while distracting, can be overcome. But there was one more substantive editorial decision that had me stewing for [...]

    11. I received this book as part of the First Reads program. I finished the book quite a while ago, but struggled to write a review. While I gave the book a 4 star rating, I should stress that at times I imagined myself rating it a 2 or 3. At times the book was very depressing and took a great deal of patience to wade through, but I remained steadfast, hoping for some glimmer of beauty or romance to make the read worthwhile. The novel follows Michele and Bianca, newleyweds who are tragically seperat [...]

    12. I won this book from the giveaway. Lucky for the publisher they sent it to me during the year I've resolved to be nicer to my books. Therefore I'm generously giving it three stars. The story is about wet-behind-the-ears mason Michele and Bianca, his wife of only a few months. When Michele's drunken father mouths off to the wrong man, the entire family is put into jeopardy. In a split second decision, Michele jumps aboard the nearest galley heading out of town. We follow Michele as he bounces aro [...]

    13. Two stars. Though it was a good story with generally decent character development and I was drawn in and wanting to know where the journey was headed, there were a few things that distracted from the story. For one, I didn't always find the struggle to be that challenging or believable. Things just sort of kept working out. And when the story was at its peak of interest I was suddenly taken away from the characters I'd been following and introduced to a whole new cast who set out on a somewhat un [...]

    17. THIS is an Italian STORYrt of simplistic for American readers maybe be really wonderful in its form and full of good background - I presume stemming from the background of Barbero as a noted Italian historian. The translation, on the other hand, did get in the way (and not a good way) in its colloquialisms, casual syntaxc etc. I assumed it was an Italian translating since I've done some 'checking' for Itallian friends who do translating and most of my notes were about that kind of thing, not the [...]

Do [...]

    19. I was pleased to find a historical novel set in the Mediterranean. And as a sailor who loves nautical fiction, I thought the Venetian galleys sounded like a perfect subject. So perfect that my expectations may have been too high. I was hoping for something like Patrick O'brien's Aubrey Maturin novels, or C S Forestor's Hornblower series. Unfortunately Barbero does not come close to these writers. Most of Barbero's dialog sentences end with exclamation points. He doesn't know what subtlety is and [...]

    20. A rousing adventure tale chock full o' historical realism, which in this case means trans-Mediterranean political intrigue, a plot that hinges partially on grain shortages, and endemic Antisemitism, patriarchal oppression, and a torture culture that makes one condemned character's decision to drown himself in the lagoon an almost heroic act of defiance (almost). Somehow, Barbero manages also to undermine all of these awful things and leave the reader with a sense of hope and joy in the end. One [...]

    21. The Eyes of Venice is historical fiction taking place around 1588 to 1590. Books about this period usually focus on Queen Elizabeth I, so this novel dealing with ordinary people in Venice is refreshing and the historical content a novelty for this period. This is a well told tale from an interesting point of view; enjoyable, educational and best of all readable. I was a lucky recipient of a complimentary copy from Goodread Frist Read for my honest review.

    22. The narrative is unnerving, the events austere and often violent, but the plot is carried out at a steady pace. Venice and the Eastern Mediterranean, at the very end of the sixteenth century, are revealed through multiple facets, often quite dark. This is an interesting novel written by a historian. The reader is in good hands, and will let him/herself by guided safely.

    23. Alas, the beautiful cover and the fact that this book won the "Alessandro Manzoni Prize for Fiction" convinced me to buy it and carry it all the way to venice, to read there. Disappointing. Basically an adventure story without particularly well-drawn characters.

    24. Not your typical novel. Who would've thought a book based in Venice in the 1500's would be so intriguing? The adventures of Michele and Bianca kept me turning the pages long after I should've put the book down. Great reading! I learned a lot about a land far away and hundreds of years ago.

    28. The mediocrity of this book could, possibly, be attributable to a poor translation. The story was interesting enough to finish it, but the writing was very uneven, and the editing atrocious.
