    1. The best yet from Davis. If you liked the Firefly TV series or the Serenity movie, you’ll love this book. And best yet, it’s the first of a new series! The characters rock! What’s not to like about a bald, tough skipper with a “past”, a giant Norse engineer who can kick ass with the best of them, and a super-sexy oriental fem-fatale who’s good with a needler? Insert a geek for a sidekick (and sometimes pain-in-the-ass) and you’ve got the basic cast for a great adventure.Add crooked c [...]

    2. I really enjoyed this book, but then again, I loved Firefly and this book read just like a Firefly episode. For instance, a Captain who is all about profit and cash yet has a heart of gold and does the right thing 95% of the time. A captivating female that uses her gile and looks to manipulate men. A first mate who is more loyal than your dog. A ship that is running with fixed parts and always needing repairs. Need I go on? So, if you love Firefly and don't feel bad about reading a rip off then [...]

    3. Zack Mbele is a man of few words; a semi colon like the one you just passed would have him moving on to read something else. He's the protagonist in Bruce Davis's sci-fi action thriller titled Glowgems for Profit. Once the action in Davis's tale gets rolling, it never really stops. In command of his own private ship, the Profit, Zack traverses our solar system in a far future, where arcologies, asteroid-based colonies, and cities on Mars and the Moon are a mundane reality. Mentally and physicall [...]

    4. Book One of “The Profit Logbook” is a type of science fiction novel for lovers of hard or classic space sci-fi in the sense that it has a “hero” or central character, who is presented with difficulties he needs to overcome with plenty of complications in the process and a hint of romance all set against the background of space. Danger, double-crossing, shoot-outs, lots of action, tech, and in this case, tech of the kind that’s not overly complicated with extensive descriptions.I had th [...]

    5. Glowgems For Profit is a novel in the classic sci-fi adventure style, which is one of the reasons I agreed to review it; I've missed that kind of book in the last few years. Zack is a military veteran who now flies cargo around the solar system in his converted ex-warship, while his body carries the reflex-enhancing remains of bio-engineering experiments conducted on him in a Martian prison. It's the kind of story setup where adventures are sure to follow.Overall, I liked the story but character [...]

    6. This was a fun lark, with a trading captain going between the mining asteroids and the major moons and Mars, all in hopes of making a profit and living to spend it. Add two different mob gangs, some corrupt police, a minor revolution, and a pretty girl, and you've got some hectic madness. All of the characters were fun and avoided major stereotypes. My only complaint is that they made the circuit between planets and outposts a few too many times. It's not like shuttling between Harlem and Chinato [...]
