    1. I was drawn to this book because of my Polish origins, but it's a wonderful read for anyone - Catherine Czerkawska uses the Polish setting with great skill to enhance the story, rather than it being a distraction. The characters in this moving love story are memorable, and the narrative is gripping. It gives an added dimension to know that many of the events happened to her family, with some characters based on real people.

    2. 'The Amber Heart', set in 19th century Poland, is an impressive, far-reaching story covering both decades and a large swathe of central and Eastern Europe. The central character is Maryanna, an unconventional noblewoman, and it is through her life that we gain an insight into the turbulent political situation of the time. Poland's internal divisions are reflected in Maryanna's intense, passionate love for Piotro, a Ukrainian peasant. Convention dictates that these two characters can never be tog [...]

    3. I'd recommend any book by this author. She's been well known here in Scotland for many years, but mostly as a playwright and poet. Now that she's switched to writing novels she's developed into the one of the UK's leading historical romantic novelists.Don't be deceived by that classification though. This isn't fluff or slush, but hard-hitting, adult stuff about love, desire, war, sex and relationships. With The Amber Heart, Czerkaswka graduates to the epic with a sweeping story about love and lo [...]

    4. This beautifully written epic novel spans life in rural Poland and Vienna, Austria for most of the 19th century. Political unrest was widespread in the far-flung Austrio-Hungarian Empire and within Poland there were deep divisions: orthodox vs. Roman Catholic, aristocrats vs. peasants, Poles vs. Ukrainians. Into this caldron we find star crossed lovers whose poignant story reminded me of Romeo and Juliet or Doctor Zhivago. Maryanna was strong-willed, well dressed and aristocratic while Piotro wa [...]

    5. This is a lovely family saga with a very original setting. This is pre-soviet Poland with a big social divide - the very rich in their mansions and the peasants barely scraping a living from the land. The nobleman's daughter shouldn't fall in love with a Ukrainian peasant, but she does and the action unrolls across the endless steppes of central Europe against a background of social unrest. Catherine Czerskawska based the novel in part on her own family history and it has the feel of being roote [...]

    6. Loved it. Would like another star to award it 6.It started slowly - and I wasn't really sure it was my thing. Set in 19th century Poland, I couldn't imagine I would get into it. I wanted to try because I had really really enjoyed another novel by the same author 'Bird of Passage'. Within a few pages the book had drawn me in and it got better and better as I turned the pages. It's a book I'll remember for a long time.
