    1. What, meanwhile, had been happening at the castle- that age-old giant of brick and stone whose swamp-skirted tower loomed formidably in the gathering dusk, and within whose proud and massive walls, guardians of bygone pomps and the traces of a vanished splendour, passion, fear, and madness held sway? You might become older than you are if you were one of Maya Okholowska’s furniture people. Alice's symbiotics along for the sea, now the wallpaper. Maybe you're born today, just now, when her hand [...]

    2. For much of my reading of this lovely and well-paced novel--particularly early on--I kept thinking, "Shame on you, Marion Boyars for marketing this as a Gothic Novel," for much of it is really quite funny. Gombrowicz is simply too perspicacious regarding people's foibles and social silliness in general for his wry observations about a spoiled teenage girl and her equally immature and stuck-up tennis coach--as well as their surrounding absurd and ridiculously self-centered elders--to stay straigh [...]

    5. Nors siužetas manęs pernelyg neįsiurbė, bet atomazga vis gi rūpėjo. O jos sulaukus beliko tik prunkštelėti.

    6. The writing style of this one is quick and entertaining. Along with some funny moments in the book, you do really have to be attentive to catch the satire. I did enjoy reading into the societal functions of Polish people in those days and the idea of how quickly word spread. The book flew seamlessly and all of the characters within, were somehow related or intertwined with each other. Most importantly, this book does a great job at portraying the troubles we let our assumptions and our brilliant [...]

    7. this one was a pleasant surprise, though also a bit of a let down. I was excited to read my first Gombrowicz, only to realise this wasn't one of his seminal works. I'm not one to complain about having to read something different, that's fine, it's only that I wasn't really keen on gothic mystery. Well, the novel managed to persuade me otherwise! It gripped me from start to finish and it had such a surreal atmosphere that at times I felt I was reading a psychological thriller, rather than an old- [...]

    8. Po ponad 10 latach latach wracam do jednej z najdziwniejszych książek, jakie miałam w życiu w rękach.

    10. I'm not a big fan of mystery or Gothic horror, but I have been a big fan of Gombrowicz. This was the last of his novels for me to complete, and damn. I think I might never be able to get into Gothic horror with the bar set this high now.

    14. I have given this a tentative 3 stars. I picked it up in a charming book shop in Warsaw filled with piles of books and 30s furniture where you got a free cup of tea per purchase . I always like to read literature from the country I'm travelling in and there was only a slim selection of English translations of Polish novels. This Gothic novel was apparently different for Gombrowicz others- just as well as my husband had read Ferdyduke & described it as "surreal & nightmareish"! This book [...]

Bref, a repasser.

No i ręczniczek!

    21. I must say that my reading of this book was rather fragmentary (I jumped from page to page) so I'll have to reprise it someday. The interesting element for me was the relationship between Maia and the tennis trainer; sometimes it was funny in its absurd and thus uncommon. I liked it :)

    24. It is very good novel from formal point of view. Author make very interesting exertions with narrator. There are mild conversion between heroes consciousnesses. Very engaging story with interesting climate.
