    1. Cover & Title - 4 out of 5Favourite character - Melena The blurb for this book really did not do anything for me, if it was not for my insane addiction to UF with female leads I doubt i would of tried this book. The fact not one of my friends has not read the book either is surprising to me, this also put me off to be honest. I am glad i tried this series as it was actually really interesting, i seriously enjoyed this book & I have gone on to read the next book in the series straight af [...]

    2. Lots of hot males in this book, though not much romance. There is, of course, potential for romance in the next book with Nikolas, Lucas or/and Derrick I wonder who she'll end up with. I sincerely hope it's Lucas, if not him, then Nikolas. I got the 'friend-vibe' from Derrick, so I hope Melena doesn't end up with him. On to the next one!

    3. Between 1 and 2 starsI bought this book after reading a good review from an other UF author. I'm sorry to say I do not share his good opinion. I really can't (and don't want) say this is a bad book, but I couldn't enjoy it. I found it terribly flat. And I could not in any way understand or feel the main characters. She seemed a robot to me, unresponsive. I was told she cried, but I could not perceive her feelings. She is beaten gravely (not tortured which, sorry to say, it's not the same). She f [...]

    4. Melena is a sensor. Her supernatural abilities means she is able to know the true nature of beings, whether they are a werewolf, a vampire, or a fae. Her kind are a threat to the very existence of the supernaturals and because of it she is always a target, always hunted. When she arrives in Alaska searching for her friend who has disappeared she finds herself smack dab in the middle of supernatural central. Even worse, she needs to trust those who want to kill her if she is to have any hope of f [...]

    5. Melena is human, but she’s also a Sensor who can detect the presence of supernatural beings, as well as their type and strength. She’s had to hide this talent because Sensors are on the supernatural “most wanted” list and if one were to realize her skill, she’d be dead. Laying low becomes impossible when her best friend, Aniya, goes missing and Melena must journey to Alaska, (an area chock full of Vampires, Werewolves, Witches, and Fairies) to find her. In order to save her friend, she [...]

    6. Not a series I will continue - it was ok but nothing memorableI had mixed feelings about this one so I think breaking it down would be best:The pros:* A strong will heroine that was tough* I really liked the abundance of paranormal beingsThe cons:* I had a hard time getting into this book - around 50% the pace started picking up, but it never really had me emotionally invested* No romance - I usually prefer at least a touch of this* At times it felt as if there were too many characters and becau [...]

    7. Darkness Haunts was good, peeps, and I breezed through it within a couple of hours. Miss Illene is a definite fan of urban fantasy and it is her genre. I also loved that all of this was happening in Alaska. This is not a region very popular in UF, and I can only name a few books that chose to use it as their setting. There are plenty of yummy moments and interesting characters: Mel herself is an intriguing woman with a background as a military interrogator; Lucas is a Nephilim angel who mostly an [...]

    8. I really dug this book. Though it was a pretty dark book I enjoyed it. We meet Melena who is a Sensor, she can sense other beings - fae, vampire, werewolf etc, however she's been told to hide her talent, and fear "sups" so she's never really interacted with them I think aside from killing them? I dunno for sure, but anways she ends up going to Fairbanks Alaska to rescue her friend, who is human I think. Some vamps took her, then to save her friend Melena has to look for something for the big bad [...]

    10. 4 Darkness StarsI do love book club when you think you want to read a book but keep putting it off. And then it gets picked. I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book I went in blind like I normally do, and I was pliantly surprised.Melena is a Sensor, meaning she can sense other supernatural or sups as she calls them and magic doesn’t work on her. She can also tell if someone is lying or not. There is a whole lot more but I am not going to go into the details. ;) But she was taught to fear [...]

    11. Melena would like to be normal. But…Life doesn't always work like that (1): She's a Sensor, which means she can sense and recognise other supernaturals and is immune to their magic. That makes her a threat to them and she knows she's on the supernatural's most wanted list, for no fault of her own.Life doesn't always work like that (2): Melena's an orphan, raised by a Sensor who was murdered by a supernatural. And that supernatural (a nephilim) is still around.Luckily, Melena's kept out of the [...]

    12. I listened to this book for an audiobook club that I belong to online. I wasn't sure what to think as I'd never heard of this series before and I scour , audible and google all the time for the most popular urban fantasy series. So it took me by complete surprise that this book was SO awesome. The main character, Melena, is a Sensor (emotional empath, able to sense supernatural creatures being nearby as well as their ages and their emotions, able to tell if anyone is telling the truth, able to s [...]

    13. Reviewed by Whitney@Shooting Stars ReviewsDarkness Haunts begins when Melena decides to go to Alaska to help search for her friend that's missing. No one knows that she's not really human, not even her best friends, and when someone dangerous finds out the truth, it's best for her to get away. So, she takes off to Alaska to find her friend as soon as she can. The problem is her friend may have been taken by someone who isn't human either. Now Melena's whole life is going to change, and things sh [...]

    14. Although I read a lot of fantasy, I don't usually read a lot which contains vampires, werewolves, witches and the lot. Still, I read it for a book discussion, and I really enjoyed it. The characters are well developed, and the lead character undergoes some changes in the course of the book. She has some strengths and weaknesses at the beginning, but she fights and overcomes prejudices, and she takes on responsibility. It is a fast-paced story that gripped me right from the start. There even is a [...]

    15. My Review:I loved this book so much and I don't have a clue where to start this review. This is the start of a brand new Urban Fantasy series featuring Melena called the Sensor Series. This is a paranormal world that is very differentd I liked it.A LOT! (To the point that I am debating between an A and an A+ rating on this book.) Melena is a sensor. As a sensor, she is not a supernatural being (or sups as they're called in this book like the vampires, werewolves, witches, pixies, and many other [...]

    16. Darkness Haunts is a fast paced urban fantasy with a strong female lead.I grabbed this story to check out in my free time and really I'm glad I did. Susan Illene creates a story that is both entertaining and quite gratifying to my urban fantasy requirements.Melena Sanders is a sensor, which means she doesn’t have many “powers” except she can sense other supernatural beings. Her kick butt strength comes from her service in the military, which I absolutely loved.Needing to rescue her friend [...]

    17. 4.5 starsMelena is a not-quite-human, trying to keep a low profile and avoid detection by supernaturals, as they are a threat to her very existence. Melena is a rare sensor -- she can sense supernaturals and is immune to magic -- and she is thrust into an association with a variety of sups when her best friend goes missing.I loved the military aspects of this novel. That, together with Melena's special gifts, makes her a kick ass heroine. She does have a very human aspect to her as well, which h [...]

    18. HOLAP. This series is amazing!! I purchase this book because of a recommendation from a friend and quickly purchased books 2 and 2.5 and read them all in about 36 hours. Laundry went undone, house went unclean, family got pizza. This is the first book in The Sensor series. Melena is a Sensor which means she's human, but packing a little extra. She's able to sense anyone paranormal within about a half mile radius AND she's immune to their magic. Which would put her on the Sups (Supernaturals) most [...]

    19. Melena is a sensor who travels to Alaska to find a friend who has disappeared, and walks into a nest of supernatural beings – all intent on preventing Mel from accomplishing her goal. Using her military training and her sensor abilities, she manages to get herself into a situation that will turn her world upside down as she finds unlikely allies in her quest to save her friend and as her own life hangs in the balance.I met this author on-line a couple years ago, and have listened with interest [...]

    20. ***Listened to the Audiobook***I listened to this book for book club and I enjoyed it much more that I thought I would. I'm a romance girl and this book has no romance, although there were hints that it's going to later in the series. I liked all the different paranormal beings and I enjoyed the main character very much! I love that she is special even in the paranormal world. She is tough and smart and I love that in a main female role. She is also loyal to her friends new and old. I really als [...]

    21. This was a book club listen for meI was bored about half the bookd if it would have been a self picked title, I probably wouldn't have finished it, if I am being honest. Some books you click with, and some you don'te premise was goodd maybe book 2 would be goodbut I don't care enough to continue this series.ere is no romancey a few sparks of attraction and a possible love triangle thingy brewingd I am kind of interested what will happen with Melena staying in Alaskabut really not enough to find [...]

    23. There were so many things wrong with this book Mostly on the emotional level, there was no depth in hero's personalities.

    25. Darkness Haunts is an impressive first novel. It is the product of someone who clearly knows how to write, and how to get the reader involved in a story. I've actually had rather good luck with indie authors myself (perhaps because I pay such careful attention to the reviews on sites like this one!), but I'm well aware that there are others who haven't. So the main thing I'd say on that front is that yes, this is a fully professional effort.By the standards of urban fantasy, the world of Darknes [...]

    26. The boys from Supernatural have nothing on this girlSusan Illene is an impressive new author who has successfully translated her military skills and love for all creatures supernatural into a convincing and well-written tale of danger, action and supernatural intrigue. Her world, a parallel civilization to our own, is crawling with vampires, werewolves, witches and pixies--and that's only the start. If you can imagine a creature of legend, chances are you'll find it here, running a local dance c [...]

    27. I read this book while on holiday in the States and I was utterly delighted with it! Ms Illene has introduced a refreshing storyline with strong, original supernatural characters who play ever so well (and sometimes not!) with our favourite werewolves, vampires and witches.Melena is a Sensor, a rare supernatural who can sense other supernaturals and who is immune to the powers wielded by them. Sensors have a history of being hunted and killed for their abilities so Melena, like others of her kin [...]

    28. Melena is just beginning to enjoy her life out of the Military when her roommate, Aniya, goes missing while meeting a man in Fairbanks, Alaska. When Aniya fails to contact Melena, her mother and other friends, Melena has no choice but to drop everything and search for Aniya. Melena has a special talent, a built in lie detector, and she is known as a “Sensor”. Facing Vampires, Melena has her own worries. Terrified that Aniya is with the Vampires, she gets a chilling phone call from her, “GO [...]

    29. This is quite bad.I'd rate it between one and two stars. I didn't finish. You might think it unfair of me to rate a book I DNF, but I got 50% through it. It's possible that the second half rocked, but I highly doubt it.Be forewarned: rambling airing of grievances to follow. The premise of this book is cheesy PNR goodness. The execution is terrible. The author seems to have been so busy telling us the story, that she forgot to show it to us. The main character acts like all supernatural beings are [...]

    30. This book, took a lot of work to read through. I just kept going thinking the lead would actually do something smart for once, or at least stop being so pathetic. There were also many holes concerning her abilities. She could've used her blood as a weapon against vampires and weres if it had that affect (the way it worked around her cabin)The weres should've been affected by the wolfsbane which I assume was in her backpack along with the fairy dustShe could've rubbed her blood on her friend so no [...]
