    1. It was okay. I appreciate some of the work done here on organizing gifts into areas of church life, and guiding thinking about applying those gifts. I was hoping for more depth in each gift described (I do like that the author doesn't limit himself to the specific words used in 1 Corinthians 12) and seeing them from a progressive perspective. Too much of this book ended up feeling forced, somehow, perhaps due to a surprising focus on within-the-church use of gifts. If one is trying to make the c [...]

    2. I confess that at times I’ve been suspicious of books written about spiritual gifts. In some of them, the authors try to market their own inventories that will help you “unlock the keys to success in your church.” Others never take into account the fact that, at least in the Bible, God sometimes calls people to ministry before fully equipping them for it. Bob Cornwall’s new book, "Unfettered Spirit: Spiritual Gifts for the New Great Awakening", wisely avoids these traps. He closely exami [...]

    3. As the author of this book, I would like to invite you to read it consider its message of spiritual giftedness and empowerment as we venture into this new awakening. If you've been reading Carol Howard Merritt and Diana Butler Bass, among others, you will find this book of interest. And yes, I gave myself 5 stars. What else could I give it?

    4. Is it about time for another Great Awakening? This is the fourth book by Cornwall that I’ve reviewed and his writing never disappoints. Although this isn’t the type of book I usually enjoy, it’s one I can say I’m glad I read. I needed this.Cornwall wonders if the Church isn’t on the verge of a new transition, guided by the Spirit. Though now a Disciples of Christ pastor, his roots are Pentecostal, and he recognizes that charismatic Christianity has a deep appreciation for the Spirit tha [...]
