    1. A timeline of how Spain went from being one of the most to least tolerant societies in the world - basically, a detailed tale of the Inquisition. The last part of the book informs on what we can learn from what happened and identify intolerance around us.

    2. In a quirk of fate, I started reading this on the day of the Charlie Hebdo attack. I wish it had been worthier.The storytelling is decent but any historian can find examples of heterogeneous societies that went wrong. There's normally some confluence of troubled times, unfortunate rulers, and unsavoury characters. So no revelatory insights here. I also question whether the oft-lauded pre-Reconquista Spain was really as tolerant as historians tell us, especially further down the social scale wher [...]
