    1. It took me forever to get through this book. Much of it was really lost on me, mostly because there was a string of characters that are probably very important to the development of psychoanalysis, but with whom I wasn't/am not familiar. I also just don't know much about psychoanalytic theory.What I found interesting was getting a little sense of the historic and cultural context of the second generation of psychoanalysts: for example that folks had to decide how to deal in the most immediate wa [...]

    2. Extensively researched and well written, the book is an excellent biography that reflects well on Anna Freud without stumbling into the arena of hagiography. As a note to those interested, it is a worthwhile read, but fair warning that its discussion of psychoanalysis is intense and not of a layman's understand; the book depends on a moderate to advanced level of understanding of Freudian theory and at least some familiarity with his contenders.
