    1. I spent an interesting few weeks this summer reading Italian novels for a new book prize, The Bridge, intended to help publicize contemporary Italian fiction in the U.S.A. and contemporary American fiction in Italy. It was a curious experience to read five contemporary novels in succession—not something I would ever normally do—and also to read a succession of novels within this competitive framework, knowing I would have to vote for one in the end. Although it didn’t win the prize, the no [...]

    2. Bella Mia is the second novel by Donatella Di Pietrantonio translated into English and re-issued by Calisi Press. It was shortlisted for the prestigious Strega prize in Italy in 2014. Having already read and enjoyed My mother is a River by this author I was delighted to be offered a review copy of Bella Mia – which I enjoyed even more.Like that previous novel, family is very much at the heart of this novel. The intricacies, history and frailties of family relationships are explored against the [...]

    4. The Italian town of L’Aquila suffered a devastating earthquake in April 2009 in which 300 people lost their lives and nearly 2000 were injured let alone the tens of thousands that were forced to abandon their homes. Here is a story set a few years after the disastrous earthquake Bella Mia by Donatella Di Pietrantonio and beautifully translated by Franca Scurti Simpson.Sitting here writing a review for Bella Mia I am at a loss as to what the people of L’Aquila must have gone through during an [...]

    8. Bella Mia, by Donatella Di Pietrantonio (translated by Franca Scurti Simpson), is set in L’Aquila, Italy, four years after the devastating earthquake of 6th April 2009 in which 300 people died, over 1500 were injured and around 65,000 had to leave their homes. The main characters in the story are still living in temporary buildings known as C.A.S.E (Complessi Antismici Sostenibili ed Ecocompatibili – sustainable and eco-compatible earthquake-proof housing complexes). They occupy a three room [...]

    9. The story takes place three years after the devastating earthquake that shattered the Italian town of Aquila in 2009. Over 300 people died, 1500 were injured and 65,000 of the residents were left homeless. The earthquake not only fractured the fabric of the town, ruining houses and businesses, it also shattered families. Leaving a huge sense of loss behind in its wake, with loved ones missing and the survivors dealing with their feelings of grief and guilt and helplessness.Bella Mia is narrated [...]

    10. Bella Mia is poetry in prose but with the same degree of engagement for the reader as with Di Pietrantonio’s first book, My Mother is a River, which is how I discovered her. Di Pietrantonio focuses on the human aspect in the aftermath of the 2009 earthquake that hit Italy. Rather than recounting the actual event, she brings the reader into the lives of those who had to live for years afterwards with the results. The narrator, a thirty-something-year-old who lost her twin in the quake, is now c [...]

    11. The Italians write with so much passion that you can almost feel the emotions in this story that will make you laugh and cry. The story tells the aftermath of the 2009 earthquake and how the sister copes without her twin, raising her child and her mothers loss of a daughter, the son has no mother and now relies on his aunt and grandmother; how will they all survive this horrendous event that actually should not have happened if the building had been built to the correct specification.

    12. An incredibly moving and beautifully written narrative about learning to navigate through life and loss, meaning and memory, family and forgiveness.
