As to be expected of McNamara, the book is a very clearly-written, easy to follow, and accurate depiction (in the revisionist sense, at least) of the Cold War and the mistakes made on both sides. McNamara's writing is concise, to the point, and informative. Not only is a historical rundown given, but so are analysis and advice - all of which is dispensed so clearly as that even a career politician would understand.
