    1. Annie Ashworth is on leave from the police force due to being pregnant. Annie's husband has also been recovering from being brutally attacked in the previous book. But it's time for him to return to work as a police and the first case back is that of a body discovered in the woods. Could this be the body of a young girl that went missing years ago?The Girls in the Woodsis the 5th book in The Annie Graham Series. I haven't read the previous four books, but there were no problems for me getting in [...]

    2. I didn't realize when I offered to read and review this from Net Galley through Carina UK that this was the 5th book in the series.I felt like I missed some things because of it. Not because of the story itself but it was obvious I missed certain things that I needed to know.Set in Victorian times two young girls are forced heavily to be photographed with their dead sister.Imagine that! Of course there was some resistance but its not like today, they had to stay there with no voice to offer to r [...]

    3. I hadn't realised when I started to read this that it is the 5th book in a series but, to be fair, it certainly didn't make it any more difficult to understand and could be read as a standalone if you wanted. Saying that, there are obviously quite a few things that have happened in previous books that are mentioned here so you may want to leave this one till you have read the others if you want to get 100% from The Girls in the Woods. The book is set in and around the lake district and opens in V [...]

    4. I received a copy of this via NetGalley in return for a fair and honest reviewThis is the 5th book in the Annie Graham series, but my first and I will definitely be picking up the others in the series after this fast paced thriller had me gripped from start to finish! The book starts in the summer of 1895 with the rather creepy opening about the Victorian fascination with 'death photos' and this really sets the tone for the rest of the story when it begins in the present day. It also flashes back [...]

    5. Once again, it's a first book of this series for me, so no idea about anything that has happened before or who is who. But not a problem, readers are helped along pretty nicely and pretty quickly. So if I did get it right, Annie is a police inspector, with whom all kind of bad stuff just happens. She must have a Gold card in hospital. Anyway, she was married to a violent guy once and then a guy, who was living close to his brother was a serial killer who set his sight to Annie and even after they [...]

    6. I received a digital copy of this title from the publisher via Netgalley.Ten Second Synopsis:When a skeleton turns up in the woods in Annie's town, she tries to stay out of things and concentrate on having a happy pregnancy. As more bodies turn up and Annie's niece goes missing, it looks like Annie will have no choice but to go in on the frontline of investigation. This is a murder mystery with a whole lot going on. There's a paranormal element in that Annie can see dead people - indeed they seem [...]

    8. I have to say I just read 30% of this book and couldn't finish it.What started out as an interesting read slowly descended into something repetitive and in my opinion a bit silly. Heath is a intriguing character, although a wife beating bully I was eager to see how his fascination with photographing corpses developed. As a child his grandfather died in dubious circumstances and while helping his own father clear out the house he finds a photo album from the 1800's. This album had photos of the d [...]

    9. Thank you to Netgalley and the Publishers for the copy of this book in return for an honest review.Received this through Netgalley, didn't realise at the time that it was part 5 of a series. The book started well, but felt that my interest started to go about a quarter into the book. I have to admit I did give up with it at half way. I'm not usually one for giving up with books, but felt that I just couldn't get into it. I have read that it didn't bother some readers that it was 5th in the serie [...]

    10. I love this series SO MUCH - Annie is a brilliant character, one that I warmed to straight away in book one and I love that we get to keep coming back to her over and over again. Things are, as always, fast paced for Annie and Will, and despite the fact that Annie is pregnant she can't help but get drawn in to the goings-on that Will is working on, even more so when her psychic ability comes into play and she is visited by the ghost of a dead girl. This is a brilliant read, with a properly sinist [...]

    11. Thriller lovers will be riveted by this novel. Beautifully written, good character description and that twist at the end you’re gonna love it! *This book was kindly sent to me via NetGalley by Carina UK*

    12. Enjoyed this more than the last one. Stronger storyline and a good few twists! Still really enjoying this season and I hope there are many more to come!

    13. Didn't realize this was book 5 of a series. It could be read as a standalone but now since I am hooked on this series I am starting on Book one (The Ghost House) to read. Love the characters and love the mystery, thriller & paranormal of the series. Book 5 had twist at the end which I never saw coming. Highly recommend if you like this this type of novel.

    14. Another page turner! Good one Helen Phifer. How you think of these things boggle my mind. I have read all five and now crave #6I hope you write one

    15. The Girls in the Woods is written by Helen Phifer and is book five in the Annie Graham series of paranormal crime thrillers. I’ve only recently started to read and enjoy books with a paranormal twist to them (ghosts…pah!) and this was an enjoyable addition to my slowly growing list of spooky stories.Annie Ashworth is on sick leave, which is a good thing seeing as she’s 6 months pregnant and seems to have a penchant for attracting the worst kind of trouble wherever she goes. Being safely st [...]

    16. There was something white sticking out of the ground in front of her. She looked at it, trying to get her mind to process exactly what it was. When it finally decided that what it was seeing was real, she opened her mouth to scream…Annie is an off duty police officer, whose husband Will has just started investigating a skeleton found in the woods. Annie is supposed to be taking it easy, considering she’s six months pregnant, but trouble seems to find her. When her niece goes missing she ends [...]

    17. When I read the description for The Girls in the Woods I was intrigued as to how the story would play out. The cover has a bit of a chilling feel to it so I was looking forward to finding out what happens. So what did I thinkI really enjoyed that there was a supernatural aspect to the story it gave the book an interesting edge. I didn't realise this was part of a series of books before I started. However I quickly discovered that it can easily be read as a standalone book. The reader is told abo [...]

    18. Helen Phifer’s The Girls in the Woods should come with a warning: don’t read this book at home alone because this chilling roller coaster ride is guaranteed to scare, shock and keep you on the edge of your seat!Annie Ashworth should be taking things easy. Off work from her job in the Lake District constabulary police, the heavily pregnant police official should be putting her feet up and enjoying the last few days of peace and solitude before the arrival of her baby. However, days spent doin [...]

    19. The Girls In The Woods opens in Victorian times introducing the concept of 'memento mori' photography, the taking of photos of the recently deceased with their loved ones as one final memento before they are laid to rest. We are then transported to 1995 and introduced to Heath who's grandfather is dying, whilst he isn't keen on seeing his grandfather close to death, he is fascinated by seeing him once he had past. Whilst clearing out his grandfather's possessions, he finds his 'Memento Mori' alb [...]

    20. The Girls in the Woods by Helen Phifer is the fifth book in The Annie Graham series. The novel starts out in 1895 with Mr. Tyson photographing three sisters except one of them just passed away. Mr. Tyson specializes in memento mori photographs (of dead people). It is a lucrative business and Mr. Tyson keeps an album of all his photos. Speed ahead to 1995 in Barrow, England. Annie Graham Ashworth is six months pregnant. Annie is to stay away from police work and just relax (like that is going to [...]

    21. This is the first book that I have read written by Helen Phifer, so I didn’t realise until I was part way through the book that this was part 5 in a series. However, this book mainly works as a standalone, though there is information about title character Officer Annie Graham that came as a bit of a shock that I would of known had I read the earlier books in the series. The book opens in Victorian England 1895 with two young girls being forced to stand next to their dead sister for one last fam [...]

    22. I didn't realise that this was book number 5 in the series. It can be read as a standalone but I will certainly be going back to read the earlier books in this series. It was an outstanding read. It was a police procedural with some supernatural elements to it.The book opens in 1885 with a photographer posing 3 sisters for a portrait which wouldn't be unusual apart from the fact that one of the girls is dead. Fast forward 100 years and the album is found by a boy who finds the photos very alluri [...]

    23. I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in return for an honest review.I love Helen Phifer's writing style. It flows easily making it a good pacey novel encouraging you to want to continue reading while ignoring all other outside disturbances. This is a supernatural thriller that has you sat on the edge of your seat hoping against hope that they get there in time.Annie can see and speak to ghosts, Heath is a wife beater and Jo keeps experiencing strange occurences in her house.Annie and Will [...]

    24. I've read and loved all of the Annie Graham series to date and this was another triumph. Now heavily pregnant, Annie is taking a much needed break from policing in the hope of a restful and relaxing pregnancy. But this is Annie and there's no such thing as relaxing and restful when it comes to her life! A skeleton has just been discovered in the woods at the other side of the village and an apparition in her home tells her that he's at it again. But who is he?The same cast of Annie's colleagues [...]

    25. I am a fan of this author, and the characters she features throughout her books. In this book Annie should be taking things easy. Given what she has been put through previously, being pregnant should realistically give her the chance to slow down and enjoy life for once. But no, that wouldn't make interesting reading would it?Annie once again finds herself in the middle of things as her niece goes missing. The family link brings her slap bang into the midst of things once again. As always the au [...]

    26. I loved this book. It is suspenseful and full of mystery. I have not any other books from this series. I did feel that since it is book 5 that I needed some back ground of the characters a little bit. I was a little lost by the switching characters point of view in the beginning but I got used to it further in the book. This was a great mystery story about a serial killer. I guess this goes to show why most people do their own picture now days. * I received this book from Netgalley in exchange f [...]

    27. This book was a spooky spine chilling read.I really enjoyed it.I would have give it 5 stars but I didn't realise it's not the first book ,so it was a little harder to understand at the beginning as I don't usually like to read books if I haven't read the others in the trilogy.having said that once I got into it I loved it and not reading the other books didn't seem a problem. This book was face paced and edge of your seat read that kept me up all night to finish it well done and thank you for le [...]

    28. I really enjoyed this book, it is book 5 in a series and I can see myself reading the others because I enjoyed this one so much Not giving to much away about the story but Annie and her husband Will would be the two main characters in the story, both detectives, with Annie always finding trouble if it doesnt find her first A supernatural thriller and well worth reading, read it you won't be disappointed x

    29. This is book 5 in the Annie Graham series and I admit I haven't read the other books in the series but I wasn't really confused at all . The Girls In The Woods is a decent book. It wasn't one that I couldn't put down but the story was decent and it kept me entertained but I don't think I will read the other books in the series.
