    1. The Skinny Years by Raul Ramos y SanchezOnce when I was reading the back cover of a book I was interested in, the author took it from me and said, “No That’s not how you decide! Here.” He opened it up and handed it back to me to read the first page of his book. “You start reading and see if the writing’s good!” That wasn’t how I chose, because I was a teacher and had to do a lot of reading for information. Whether the writing was good or not, I needed the information so didn’t ha [...]

    2. In his fourth novel, Raul Ramos y Sanchez offers an entertaining and evocative tale of an affluent Cuban family fleeing Fidel’s revolución to settle in 1959 Miami. Theirs is a story of strangers in a strange land as they try to adapt to the peculiarities of la Vida Americana. And while remaining fiercely loyal to their cultural touchstones, they soon find themselves forced to make painful compromises as they struggle with their drastically reduced circumstances. As told through the eyes of th [...]

This novel chronicles everything from his experiences in Havana right before fleeing (his family was well-connected and wealthy there), to adjusting to living in poverty (his mother became a house keeper at nearby hotels), and through high school. Skinny is likable throughout, although he does make his fair sh [...]

    4. I really liked this book up until the ending. I won't spoil it for folks who haven't reached the end but it is totally unrealistic. Such a shame for such a great main "character."

    5. I won this book through . Very well developed and likeable characters. Beautifully written story of family struggles. Loved it.

    6. The Skinny Years is the story of a Cuban family that immigrates to Miami Florida after Castro takes over in 1959. The Family portrayed in the book illustrated what happened to many of the Cuban refugees who went from rich and privileged to marginalized and poor while struggling to adapt to a new culture. The story is not over dramatic but rather matter of fact of the daily challenges, joys and hopes of this likable, colorful, at times funny and flawed family. I found it Interesting, informationa [...]
