Written by the man who later had a hand in creating the biopic historical film Salvador, this striking, psychologically-ingrained book highlights the differences and inner attitudes of soldiers, reporters and others during the Vietnam War. Flower of the Dragon is a little dated but an excellent capturing of the times.

    3. An excellent book detailing soldier's mutinies and corruption in Vietnam at the height of the war. I found Boyle's plunge into activism as a particularly interesting considering his conflicting role as a war correspondent. It becomes obvious through Boyle's reporting that there was an underlining conflict between 'lifers', those who joined the military as a career, and average grunts who were drafted which resulted in murder and mutiny.
