    1. What I liked about this is that it brings you right back to another era, per-electric, rural, innocent time. However, there are deeper meanings here too. Kickham was a nationalist and worked for freedom for his fellow countrymen. This theme pervades the novel just barely under the surface. The language is a bit difficult to understand at times but it is worth the effort. The death of Norah Leahy reminded me of Little Nell and I reckon Kickham is Ireland's equivalent of Charles Dickens.
