    1. Extensively researched, fun AND scholarly, but neatly omits American burelsque striptease and hip hop from the history of dancing women (well, except for the early 7 veils tease acts). For social and fine art dance thru the early 20th century, it's unbeatable. But I rather resent that Madonna's mentioned in the title and BARLEY discussed in the book--and that's why it gets 3 stars instead of 4. It probably needs to be twice as long to accomodate all that the title makes me want. The topics that [...]

    2. Buonaventura is facilely confident in tracing the socio-sexual implications of dancing, partly because the conclusions she draws are so obvious. As such, there isn't a lot of substance to be drawn from them, nor does she engage her conclusions with any sort of plan for gender parity. That's disappointing; such a study seems naturally geared towards such a discussion. Instead, this is a backwards-focusing book, reviewing the political and social implications of dancing women in history and leavin [...]

    3. Had my students read it. VERY interesting, but a very "pointed" point of view (if that even makes sense). She presents some opinions and my students argued whether they were facts or not Who knows. Glad that the author HAS a point of view though. I definitely appreciated that, and appreciated that it got my students THINKING about what they do and how it reads in the eyes of others rather than just blindly doing it.

    4. Did not finish this one. I quit about 200 pages in. While I'm sympathetic to the author's POV, my feelings are similar to other reviewers: there's too much made of too-little evidence here. It undermines her credibility, despite the interest of the subject.

    5. A slightly biased view of the history of dance. Lots of great info and a good read, though the author spends a little bit too much time railing about corsets (an entire chapter). Apart from that, good book.
